 Introduction
West Virginia is a state of the United States in the Appalachia region. West Virginia broke away from Virginia during the American Civil War and was admitted to the Union as a separate state on June 20, 1863. The capital and largest city is Charleston. Its nickname is the “Mountain State.” West Virginia is bordered by Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland and Virginia. One of the major resources in West Virginia's economy is coal.
