Minnesota is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States known as the “North Star State,” “The Land of 10,000 Lakes,” and “The Gopher State.” The Minnesota territory was admitted to the Union as the 32nd state in 1858. Nearly 60% Minnesota residents live in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, the center of transportation, business, and industry, and home to an internationally known arts community. The remainder of the state, often referred to as Greater Minnesota. The economy of Minnesota had a gross domestic product of $234 billion in 2005. Thirty-six of the United States' top 1,000 publicly traded companies are headquartered in Minnesota. The per capita income in 2004 was $36,184, the eighth-highest in the nation. The median household income in 2005 was $52,024, ranking eleventh in the U.S. |
