The Commonwealth of Kentucky is a state located in the East Central United States known as the “Bluegrass State.” Originally a part of Virginia, in 1792 it became the 15th state to join the Union. Kentucky borders West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. The western border is formed by the Mississippi River. The total gross state product for 2005 was $140.4 billion with a per-capita personal income of $28,513. Kentucky's agricultural outputs are horses, cattle, tobacco, dairy products, hogs, soybeans, and corn. Its industrial outputs are transportation equipment, chemical products, electric equipment, machinery, food processing, tobacco products, coal, and tourism. The Eastern Kentucky Coal Fields are recognized as being among the most productive in the nation. |
