Alaska is one of the wealthiest and most ethnically diverse states of America. It is known as “The Last Frontier” and “The Land of the Midnight Sun”. The territory was purchased on April 16, 1867 from Russia. Alaska was made the 49th state on January 3, 1959. Alaska is not bordered by any other state. Nearly 500 miles of Canadian land separates Alaska from Washington State. The state capital is Juneau which you can only reach by ship or air travel. Alaska is the largest state in the United States measuring in at 570,380 square miles. In 2005 the total gross state product was $39.9 billion but its per-capita GSP for 2005 was $60,079 making Alaska third in the nation. Eighty percent of the Alaska's revenues are derived from petroleum extraction. Excluding oil and natural gas, seafood, salmon, cod, pollock, and crab are Alaska's main export products. |
